Madonna Inn

When I was in NY last week, I was chatting with a consultant/design blogger friend who was talking about making a trip to Hearst Castle

A few years ago, my husband Sam planned a road trip to Hearst Castle for my birthday. (Loved it!) While down there, we stayed overnight at the Madonna Inn, which is kitchiness at it’s very finest! I told her that she must check it out.

It’s very 60’s in feel- all of the rooms have a theme and all will make you feel like you seriously stepped back in time- and maybe an alternate universe. My favorites (and I’m guessing, the most popular) are the “rock” rooms with literally have boulders for walls, floors, or ceilings. (Maybe not the best spot to be in an earthquake.) Many have rock waterfall showers too… I think if you’re going for the full experience, you shouldn’t miss it.

This is the room we stayed in- Jungle Rock.

And they now have an online boutique, as any motel should- ha! The coffee table book is really pretty cool…

I’m kind of obsessed with this pink sugar…

And I love the Madonna Inn towel a friend bought me when she made her maiden voyage.

Oh wow. I haven’t thought of this place in forever. We used to stop there for dinner on family drives from SF to see my grandfather in Santa Barbara. The huge seashell sinks in the bathroom were my favorite.

Love it. We stayed for 2 nights, so I booked a different room for each night - one of the rock rooms, and then Hearts and Flowers. I still have the “soap cake”, hand soap which comes in a pink hexagonal box with a little photo of a cake on each side. Do you remember those HUGE cakes? And the shiny pink booths in the restaurant?
