Oaktown Spice Shop

Have you been to Oaktown Spice Shop? I’m dying to check it out and pick up some their Montreal Steak and Chop (a Food52 favorite!).  I can’t believe I still haven’t made it in- but I did hear they’ll be at Kitchener’s One Year Anniversary Pop-Up Market next Thursday and I’m thinking between the ‘saucy strawberry mini pies’ and the Argentine empanadas, I’ll definitely have to make that trip!

Castle in the Air’s Victorian Paper Toys

As seen on UPPERCASE Magazine’s blog, the team at  Castle in the Air has added over 250 Victorian paper toys, models, scenes and games from owner Karima Cammell’s personal collection! The giclee reprints bring the French Pellerin company’s 100+ year old designs back to life- and we think they are just gorgeous.  {Pop on over to UPPERCASE for an exclusive free Victorian model download from Castle in the Air!}

Gibson & Flemming

Top San Francisco interior designers {and dear friends} Grant Gibson and Caitlin Flemming have rented booths at the Alameda Flea Market this Sunday {August 4th!} because their warehouses are overflowing with treasures and they have to make room.  Of course, their “closet-cleaning” means you get covetable finds from all over the world at sweet prices- think Moroccan rugs {that Grant brought back himself!}, bolts of chic designer fabrics, unique lighting fixtures, art, books and of course furniture.  {We’re kind of salivating over here at Ruby Press. I mean, you’ve seen their work, right?}

Find them at spaces #P11 and #P12 and get there early {it starts at 6 AM}, because seriously everyone is going to be shopping this sale.

Store Front

Photographers James and Karla Murray created a book that makes me wax nostalgic for New York City… Store Front is a photographic account of the classic, retro store signage fading from the NY street scape.  The owners of these mom-and-pop businesses invited James and Karla into the shops, and often into their homes, telling them the stories behind the facades- many of which are included in the book. It’s broken up by neighborhoods and my old ‘hood {the East Village} is chock full of gems- some of which are sadly now gone {CBGB’s and Mars Bar} and many of which still exist today {Gem Spa, McSorley’s Ale House, and 2nd Ave Deli}.  NY-ophiles, this one‘s for you!

Suite Jewels

Now isn’t this a genius idea?  Guests staying at the Berkeley Hotel in London can borrow from the hotel’s “fashion trunk“, filled with chic vintage jewelry and accessories from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s while in town.  {Think navy Chanel clutch from the 70’s or a mod 60’s Courreges bracelet!} Extra bonus: if you can’t bear to take off the ring, keep it…after paying for it, of course!

Uptown Oakland is quickly becoming a destination for hamburger aficionados.

Luka’s makes a hell of a burger, my family adores Trueburger {OMG, the garlic mayo they put on their burgers is out of this world!!}, Kate is a fan of Oakland newbie Umami Burger {toppings include parmesan crisps, shiitake mushrooms and Hatch green chiles}, and now Kronner Burger is moving into the ‘hood.  {Kronner Burger describes their burgers simply as “Rare. Salty.” Yum.}

Slicer Opening this September!

This September, my incredibly talented friend Colin Etezadi is opening his first restaurant, Slicer Pizzeria, in Oakland! Colin’s a vet of Bay Area pizza greats {Pizzaiolo, Gioia, and Boot + Shoe Service} and has cooked for me and my girlfriends for my birthday a couple years ago. I can say first hand he’s got what it takes and we’re so excited over here for his new adventure! Congrats, Colin!
