This is Oakland

For the past 10 months, I have been working on a book in my free time with a friend- the fabulous Kristen Loken- about this awesome (and often misunderstood) city that I live and work in- Oakland, CA. It’s called This is Oakland: A Guide to the City’s Most Interesting Places and it’s a stylish, visually-driven, guide/travel book about the city…but it’s more than that really.  We are profiling the most innovative, interesting businesses around the city, as well as the people that make this city so vibrant.  Oakland has been called “The New Brooklyn” time and time again, and there’s a reason behind it.  I feel like the country is looking our way to see what’s happening and I hope this book will offer readers an insider’s view of the city.

We are still working on the book, which we are self-publishing, and just launched the Kickstarter campaign! Won’t you please come check it out- and spread the word to your friends?  With Kickstarter, it’s all or nothing and we have less than a month to reach our goals.  Thanks so much!  xx

Kristen Loken

You may recognize her name…she is our go-to photographer for all things Ruby Press- and the Davis family for that matter!  You’ve seen her work if you’ve seen photos from Sammy’s first birthday, the ten year anniversary ‘Carnival of Sweets’ bash we created Viv&Ingrid or the intimate dinner party we produced for Cole Haan.  {To name just a few!}

Kristen just launched a gorgeous new website and blog featuring her wedding and event photography- check it out here!

Kristen Loken

If you read our blog on a regular basis, you’ll likely recognize the name Kristen Loken….She’s a San Francisco Bay Area-based photographer that we just adore here at Ruby Press.  Kristen has shot almost every event we’ve produced and when a client needs their products or space shot, she’s our go-to.  And of course when I needed some new portraits taken, she’s my gal.  She just ‘gets it’, as I often say…plus she’s a dream to work with.  Oh, and did I mention she is one of the area’s most covetable wedding photographers?  When top local editors get married, they call her.

Kristen photographed our little Sammy when he was just two weeks old and I just love this shot of his tiny toes!

We’re off!

We ended 2009 with the Ruby Press Christmas Party at Crown & Crumpet yesterday…yay!!  {And don’t be fooled by these party pics from the tea room- there was plenty of champagne flowing as well!}  What a great way to end the year- with our fabulous team.  Thanks so much for all that you do- Angela, Kate, Terra, and Kadie!  We wouldn’t be Ruby Press without you!  And to our blog readers- we may not have met the majority of you, but we feel like we know you.  Thanks so much for checking in with us each day and for your sweet and thoughtful comments!  We’re all really looking forward to a wonderful 2010 together!

xxMelissa and Sam

P.S. Wanna see the photos I took at the party on my iPhone?  {These professional shots are from the fabulous Kristen Loken!}  Follow me on Twitter- I’ll be posting them today!

One quick shot…

My full post-event post from tonight’s Viv&Ingrid Ten Year Anniversary Party at Miette will happen on Friday, but until then here’s a teaser….  Thanks so much to everyone who joined us and congratulations again to Vivian and Ingrid, who I could not adore more.  xx
